Self-Care Day: top tips for looking after number one

23rd July, 2021

From making the bed to meditation, find out how to create your self-care sanctuary at home.

Self-Care Day, on 24 July is the perfect opportunity to reflect on and improve your wellbeing. Self-care means purposefully doing something to look after your emotional, mental and physical health. It could be something small, like allowing yourself a lie in, or you could invest time in taking a long bath. Self-care really is as simple as it sounds: taking care of yourself.

Why is self-care important?

We lead increasingly hectic lives and when you’re rushing around, it is so easy to forget about putting yourself first. Taking time out to relax has been found to reduce stress and anxiety, and it can even boost your self-esteem. When you take care of yourself, you’ll not only feel better, but be better in all areas of your life, from work to relationships.

You don’t have to commit a huge amount of time and it doesn’t have to cost the earth. It’s about committing to putting yourself first, even just for a while.

Self-care starts at home

It could be anywhere you like - your living room, bedroom, bathroom or even an outdoor space. Start by creating a place filled with things that make you feel comfortable and calm. It should be somewhere where you can feel relaxed and where you can focus on yourself.

Tips on creating a space for self-care:

Make your bed - it only takes a minute or two and makes you feel instantly more put together!

Get rid of clutter - A messy space can make us feel stressed and impact our productivity. If you haven’t used an item in the last year, it’s time to throw it out. Think Marie Kondo - does it bring you joy? If not, time to get rid!

Cleaning - use non-toxic cleaning products that are good for you and your environment. You may be pleasantly surprised at how mentally uplifting a spring clean can feel.

Light your favourite natural scented candle to create some ambience and open the door to peace.

Comfort is key, so consider the different things that make you feel comfortable; bed, sofa, lounger, cushions on the floor or even a hammock?

Clothes - make sure you’re not in anything too tight or uncomfortable. Try putting on pyjamas, a robe, sweat pants or fluffy socks.

In cold environments try cozy blankets or a fireplace. In warm environments have the window open or a fan to keep you cool.

It’s all about trying out different things until you feel comfortable in your own space.

How do I practice self-care?

It really can be a small thing like listening to your favourite music or taking a nap. Here are some of our favourite practices to help you thrive at home…

Meditation
Research has shown that meditation can reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure and improve quality of sleep. Through activating the parasympathetic nervous system this helps the muscles to relax and the heart rate slow.

Instead of reaching for your phone when you first wake up, try starting your day with a 15 minute meditation exercise . Apps like Calm and Headspace can help guide you through meditation and they are great for beginners.

Relaxing bath

Baths are well known to relieve aches and pains and calm the body. Go a step further and add essential oils to your water to really feel the benefits. We’d recommend REN Moroccan Rose Otto Bath Oil.
This might also be a good opportunity for a digital detox, have a mindful bath by leaving your phone out of reach and shut off from the digital world.

Have a total ‘Unplug day’
If you can commit to a whole day, unplugging from emails, texts and social media is a good way to give your brain a break from endless information, pressures and multitasking. Digital distractions can make it difficult to be present in the moment, even if you planned to use the day to relax.

Let your friends and family know you’re switching off for the day or set an ‘out of office’. Put your phone somewhere like in a drawer or high on a shelf where you won’t be tempted to check it.

Treat yourself
Make yourself a fancy coffee drink at home. Try making your own vanilla latte with Jot coffee with our favourite with organic vanilla syrup. Or have a herbal tea and enjoy some quiet time. At CASA Home we like Numi tea and Yogi tea.

Yin yoga
If you feel like going a step further, yin yoga forces us to slow down. Allow yourself to be present and be aware of the subtle sensations in the muscles as the tissues are lengthening, hydrating and becoming more pliable. You may come out of it feeling like you’ve had a massage! Try Yoga with Kassandra here.

Watch and listen
Listen to your favourite music, watch your favourite film or simply spend time with loved ones. We love the idea of curating playlists based on your moods. Next time you go for a walk or are cleaning, you can suitably jam out.

Routines
Take some time out to reassess your routine. Create a new morning and nighttime routine that will help you to relax. Think about what sets you up for a happy day and what helps you have a restful night, then write down a plan and try to turn them into habits.

We hope these tips help you to create the best self-care experience you can have at home. Remember, next time you’re rushing through your morning routine, stressed out at work or running to the next event, take a minute to reflect and mentally book in some self-care time. Self-care day is not designed just to last 24 hours, so take your favourite practices forward with you. Home is what you make it, it’s often the small things that can transform the way you feel.

If you manage to throw anything out Marie Kondo style, you might consider donating some unwanted items to our nonprofit partner, A Sense of Home. When you purchase a CASA Home gift set you have the chance to donate directly to them by packaging gently used home essentials in the shipping box we send you. Just be sure to check the list of items and instructions inside your box.
